LDS art is a very important part of LDS culture. Below are some of the top paintings that most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would be familiar with.

1. Jesus the Christ – by Del Parsons – This is probably one of the most important paintings in the LDS church is used in many pieces of LDS literature, handbooks, and missionary tools. This was a commissioned painting by the church.
2. The Prophet Joseph Smith – by Alvin Gittins – also a commissioned painting by the church. This painting was painted to help give an idea of what Joseph Smith might have looked like. It was based on the descriptions of those who knew the Prophet best.
3. Christ and the Children – by Frances Hook – This simple piece of LDS artwork is a painting of the Savior with several children showing his loving kindness that he has for the children of the world.
4. The Second Coming – by Harry Anderson – This piece of art is a picture of the Savior coming down from the clouds in all of his glory.
5. Jesus Praying in Gethsemane – by Harry Anderson – This sacred event is portrayed in such a way that members of the Mormon faith find a connection with the savior.
6. Jesus Teaching in the Western Hemisphere – by John Scott – This painting represent the Savior when he came down and showed himself to the Nephites in the Americas soon after his death, crucifixion and resurrection.
7. Moroni Hides the Plates in the Hill Cumorah – by Tom Lovell – This is a painting of the Prophet Moroni, when he was hiding the gold plates in the Hill Cumorah, he is praying over the plates in hopes that they will be of benefit to the world.
8. Christ and the Rich Young Ruler – by Heinrich Hofmann – This painting comes from a small story in the Bible, Christ asks a young ruler to forsake his kingdom for an eternal one. (Matthew 19:16-24; Mark 10:17-25; Luke 18:18-25) Although Heinrich Hofmann was not a member of the Mormon faith, his paintings are well known among members of the Mormon church.
9. The Pool of Bethesda – by Carl Bloch – This is a painting that would be well known by most members of the Mormon faith. This painting shows the saviors compassion for the poor and the down trodden. Many of Carl Bloch’s paintings are portrayed in the movie the “Testaments” produced by the Mormon Church. His artwork has also been on display at Brigham Young Univeristy in Provo Utah. Carl Bloch was not a member of the Church however, his artwork is well known among Latter-day Saints.
10. Sacrament Meeting – by Doc Christensen – This painting is a painting of the Savior holding the Sacrament for a young couple, although Christ’s face is not shown, the marks in his hand make it apparent who he is. This painting though relatively new has captured the hearts of many.

These are just a few of the paintings that are available as resources for latter-day saints. Most LDS art and artwork are relatively affordable and can be picked up at the church’s website or distribution centers.

Colors are often vibrant and bright and applied with short brush stokes, creating an image with emphasis on color, movement, light, but without fine detail.

Art photography is more than just snapping a photo, blowing it up and putting in on your wall as art. Although you can create some fantastic photos that you can display as art, learning a few tricks to enhance the pictures can make all the difference.

Take a simple picture of a tomato, for example. You can find many designer rooms complete with pictures of food items that look great. But if you look closely, you can notice that it is not just a simple picture of a red tomato that is hanging on the wall integrated into the decorating scheme. There is a certain element of artistic merit in the photograph.

The photo in the stylized room that you love looking at is not just a photograph of a simple tomato that someone shot at random. A lot of thought and artistic value went into that picture. Do you see the droplets of moisture on the bright red skin of the tomato? Those droplets make the tomato seem juicy. You can almost taste the cool, flavorful tomato just by looking at the picture.

And the tomato in the picture is not just dead-centre either. It is probably a picture of part of a tomato-maybe just the top part or a quarter of it. The tomato has become the subject of the picture that has a certain shape, leaving some of the picture up to your imagination. The space around the tomato also makes up empty space which makes you focus on the subject (the tomato).

Pay attention to the colors in the photograph as well. Isn’t that tomato a bright, bright red? Is it set against a contrasting background to make it show up its redness and juiciness even more? Is the background plain, or does it have a pattern that contrasts against the tomato’s one-tone red color? All of these artistic elements can be used to enhance the photo.

Another approach to your tomato picture might be to take a group photo of several tomatoes together. Again, you can place them against a contrasting background to show them off, or against a white background to help you focus more on the tomatoes themselves.

You could also place the tomato or tomatoes in an attractive dish that might add to the artistic effect of the photograph. The dish would become another element of your photo design.

Although the above is talking about a simple picture of a tomato that can be used as photographic art, the same ideas can be applied to any still life photograph you may choose to use as art. Use the object to take advantage of its best feature (in the above case, the juiciness of the tomato and its bright red color) and use color enhancement techniques for contrasting elements. Position the objects to use the positive and negative space as part of the artwork.

Well there is really only one way to truly discover art painting techniques. You guessed it, practice them! Where do I start, you may be asking. Well if you are beginning, you should start by “copying” other artists work. I am not saying to take credit for others work, just learn from those that are trying to teach.

I have created several step by step lessons in which you will be taken from a blank canvas to a beautiful masterpiece that you alone created! You will be absolutely amazed at yourself and at how easy and fun painting is to learn!

Wet on Wet. This is an oil painting technique. The artist applies moist paint on top of moist paint because oil paint stays wet. You must lean blending techniques in order to avoid making a muddy mess on the canvas.

Layering. If you are using acrylic paint then you will likely apply a layer and allow it to dry – this takes about 2 minutes! Now apply highlights or more color on top of preceding layers

Texture. If you are painting with oil, the paint usually goes on thick and what you see is what you get. The finished painting is full of brushstrokes, knife strokes and highs and lows in the paint itself. You can add texture medium to acrylic paint to create the same affect as well

As you learn to paint, you will find that several different techniques form the foundation of your art – the brush you use, the colors you choose, how you apply the paint, and so on. You form your own unique painting techniques. You may learn from others but your work will be uniquely your own and you will refer back to the techniques that you have found that worked for you.

Ask your clients what they want on their little faces. They’ll tell you. If you can’t draw that particular thing, then suggest something else. Your little clients will probably go right along with you.

All you need are paints, a couple of small brushes, and a sponge or two. Please make sure the paints are real FDA approved face paints. Nothing else is really safe, especially not for children.
